Description

- Brand Story -
The Chief Project, their mission is to create a Hong Kong with zero waste.

The Chief Project handkerchiefs are all handmade in Hong Kong. Not only are they committed to lessening waste, they also believe in reinvesting in Hong Kong’s future. they strongly believe in reinvigorating our economy by manufacturing right here in Hong Kong instead of outsourcing labour to other countries. After carefully sourcing their fabrics, they employ local expert seamstresses to make our handkerchiefs.

After Hong Kong became a financial hub instead of a manufacturing city, many skilled workers struggled to find employment in different sectors. And they believe that even though it is more expensive to manufacture here than for example China, that this is the right thing to do. Their sewing partners’ enthusiasm, drive, and professionalism is reflected in the quality of their handkerchiefs and they couldn’t be happier. Their production line is close to home, local, and 100% Hong Kong. This way, they can make sure our handkerchiefs are produced ethically and safely too!

The Chief Project

According to data released by the Environment Bureau, tissue paper makes up 7% (650 tonnes) of Hong Kong’s daily wastage. This closely follows kitchen refuse and food waste, which is the largest component. Unfortunately, due to hygienic reasons, used tissue cannot be recycled, thus generating more waste.

We were all brought up using handkerchiefs. In a sense, handkerchiefs have become an emblem of good upbringing and etiquette. Day by day, our busy lives and materialistic consumerist attitudes have made us ever more complacent and lazy. The handkerchief was slowly forgotten, overshadowed by the convenience of tissues.

According to the Environment Bureau, tissues make up 7% of Hong Kong’s rubbish. That’s 650 tonnes every single day. Following kitchen refuse and food waste, used tissues are the second largest contributor to landfills. What’s more – they’re not even recycled because of hygiene issues, thus generating more waste.

Try counting how many pieces of tissue paper you use every day. Simple maths demonstrates how much stress we are putting onto our landfills and our planet. Hong Kong has a population of 7.3 million people; if everyone uses just one piece of tissue paper a day, that’s already 7.3 million pieces of tissue. And let’s be honest here, no one uses just one piece of tissue a day. Let’s not sabotage our environment for a moment of ease.

What’s their plan?
They collect and recycle leftover fabric yardages from professional cotton fabric manufacturers, giving them a second life as your handkerchiefs through the hands of local women labour organisations. By doing this, the project:
1) Prevents manufacturers from disposing large amounts of high quality fabric, in turn relieving wastage pressure on our landfills
2) Provides an alternative solution by guiding Hong Kong towards a zero waste lifestyle with handkerchiefs
3) Develops social capital by creating jobs for unemployed women workers in our community

The Chief Project aims to produce a triple-win situation for our community. The Chief project is working towards creating a zero-waste future where handkerchiefs can substitute the majority of tissue use, at the same time providing opportunities for women workers who are working hard to take care of their families and children.

Build a sustainable lifestyle with us. The Time is Now.
